On 2nd February 2016, Actress performed a one-off show at the Barbican with The London Symphony Orchestra. This collaboration was organised by Boiler Room with funding from the Arts Council of England. I created the art direction for the event which went on to inspire the show visuals and the compositions that opened the performance.
When briefing me on the artwork for the show, Actress provided a list of singular words and phrases when talking about inspiration behind the music, phrases such as 'chrome', 'alien interference' and 'technology'. I used an image of a satellite called Lageos 1 as the central graphic in the artwork. Lageos 1 is a satellite that was put into orbit in 1976 which allows for very precise laser measurements of earth through the 426 glittering "retroflectors" covering its surface. Also, inside the satellite is a plaque designed by Carl Sagan which gives an overview of earth for any alien race that might discover it in the future. It shows the planet and its continents 250 million years in past, in 1976 and 8 million years in future - shows numbers 1 - 10 in binary and has a representation of the earth orbiting the sun.
The lighting and projected graphics during the show were designed by Nic Hamilton and inspired by the Lageos 1 theme.
A limited edition t-shirt was produced and sold at the show based on the artwork on the plaque inside the Satellite
